[i]tanjent: ow ow ow

my back is spasming like whoah. ow ow cramp ow ow.

spent the afternoon soldering stuff for groovik's cube. lots and lots of soldering. also, i totally want a temperature-controlled soldering iron now.

then went over to B's place for post-soldering barbecue. he and a bunch of other geeks got together and bought a HUGE GINORMOUS HOUSE OMG. it's like 2 Pink Palaces plus a basement apartment that is larger than my current place (complete with dining room and full kitchen).

ate much sausage and grilled pineapple, then came home and played with the bliplace board layout a bit more. also chopped up some perfboard to the correct size so i could try and put components on it. need to hold off ordering boards until the final parts get here - want to make sure everything's going to fit nicely before i shell out for them. the mics in particular are rather large for electret elements (but I'm getting them for 1/5 what I expected to pay, so I don't really care that much).

will probably head to fry's tomorrow for some copper-clad board and etchant. wee chemicals.

[i]atheist_exp: TAM7 - Part 6

Quick updates...

Adam Savage spent a little time telling us some rather compelling stories about his early personal failures. We watched a great panel, hosted by DJ Grothe, featuring Penn, Teller, Ray Hyman and Jamy Ian Swiss. They discussed some ethical issues involved in the conjuring arts and the impact of psychic entertainers.

After lunch, there was a talk about the late Jerry Andrus, along with a few segments from a documentary about his life, followed by a panel on skepticism and broadcasting, featuring Penn & Teller, Adam Savage, Jennifer Oullete and Bill Prady.

Phil Plait spoke about the 2012 doomsday predictions.

They discussed the more than $8000 raised to provide vaccinations to children in southern Nevada.

And now...they're doing the live auction.

I'm still feeling a little under the weather so I'm going to grab a nap after the auction, so I can party tonight.

[i]bsdcat: In Kansas

I drove up with my mother, brother, and his girlfriend yesterday; from Austin to a small town outside Kansas City in about 13 hours. My sister, her husband, and our father came up separately, with other family coming in from California and all over Kansas. We had a brief memorial at my grandmother's grave at Mt. Muncie Cemetery this morning; my uncle couldn't bear to leave her ashes hanging around unburied, so the actual funeral was moved up to a couple of weeks ago.

There wasn't much to the memorial service, but we all got to see the grave site and meet extended family. Aside from the drive yesterday and the upcoming drive tomorrow, I'm happy to be here.

Ok, this is a dumb-@$$ question that I should totally know the answer to. I'm a rogue who doesn't know how to use combo points properly.

That's a slight exaggeration. I've been a rogue for years, and I'm currently doing hard mode Ulduar stuff in one of the top raiding guilds on my server. But I could do with some advice. Specifically, SnD. I'm combat swords with 4/5 T8, so I'm loving Rupture at the moment. But I seem to be letting SnD slip a lot, so my DPS is suffering. My standard rotation is to start off with either a 1cp SnD or 5cp Rupture, then keep doing 1cp SnD while I alternate 5cp Rupture and Eviscerate (if Rupture is still up).

I don't think that's cutting it. I don't have the SnD glyph, and the rotation dates back to TBC when I had the 2/5 Tier 4 set bonus. Because I'm only doing 1/2cp, I get an 11-15 sec SnD that keeps dropping. Instead of renewing it straight away I usually spend combo points on eviscerates or ruptures.

Every rogue knows that you should keep SnD up *always*. But my rotation isn't working out that way, and ElkBuffBars is very unhelpful as it's hard to see if SnD is still up (it's ok for keeping track of Rupture, though). So, the questions are:

- What is the ideal rotation of SnD, Rupture and Evisc?
- How flexible is that rotation? Is high DPS *totally* dependent on rigidly following it?
- Is there a more useful addon I can use to watch the various different timers?

Thanks!

[i]hannarks posting in [i]worldofwarcraft: Goodbye, warcraft

Well, I've officially quit Warcraft. I just need to focus on this whole "graduating university" thing, as well as the "getting a job" and "finding a soul-mate" tasks.

Thank you everyone for the advice over the years, and for keeping me thoroughly entertained.

As I really want nothing more to do with anything warcraft, I've put some items up on ebay. Just a few little things together in one lot. COMPLETELY COMPLIANT WITH THE TOS, don't worry :-)

I really wish I could bring myself to delete my account, but it just seems like such a waste, you know?

[i]knight_errant: Pain in the name of safety

Telltale sign #2 that I am most assuredly not seventeen years old anymore: I pulled a back muscle moving a bookcase during earthquake preparations earlier today. Ugh. (However, I will take that over what is shaping up to be one of the hottest summers on record in Texas.)

We did manage to get two of the bookcases secured to the wall, so here's hoping they don't fall on us. We must acquire additional hardware before we can attach the other three to the wall, so they'll have to wait (along with any major earthquakes) until next weekend.

[i]libera_folio: ”Nekapabla veki pasiojn, Esperanto meritas disvastiĝi”

It's Satuday morning in Las Vegas...do you know where your host is?

I'm sitting in the ballroom, listening to Michael Shermer make a case for Libertarianism. He's not done and I'm certainly not going to get into it now, but it'll likely be part of the on-air review.

I developed a bit of a sore throat last night, so I took some meds and went back to the hotel room. We had an early morning and I didn't want to be sick. As it turns out, I'm definitely a little bit sick but I'm not going to let it stop me from any of my planned fun.

This morning, during the live 'Skeptics Guide to the Universe' - Rebecca Watson married Sid Rodrigues in a planned, spontaneous wedding that was a secret to all but a handful of people. During the SGU Q&A session, Sid got the microphone and offered a quick proposal, Rebecca said she'd need a wedding party (and a group of appropriately dressed people walked up on stage), her family (who also came up on stage), music (George Hrab came out and sang for the cake cutting and first dance), etc. Adam Savage presented the rings and much fun was had by all.

I have a nice "Wedding Invitation" which reads; "The honor of your presence has been forced against your will at the marriage of Rebecca Watson to Sid Rodrigues... Saturday, the eleventh of July, two thousand and nine at half past eightish in the morning."

More later, but we're trying to plan a group picture of AE/NPR fans Sunday afternoon at 3:30 (after the Million Dollar Challenge).

[i]tanjent: first rev of the bliplace board

LED(s) at the top, microphone will be in those two holes at the bottom (Pad2Pad didn't have a good outline for it).

Board is 0.5" x 1.5" and all parts are nice and symmetrical. I even managed to squeeze in two extra LED mounting points, so if you wanted to build an RGB one you could.

All the parts except the battery are on a 0.1" grid, so you could also build it out of protoboard.

The battery holder mounts on the back of the board in the two slightly larger holes on the centerline - you'll have to mount the stuff in the middle of the board, flip it over and mount the battery holder, then flip it over again and mount the LEDs and the microphone. No big deal, just a little weird.

I kinda wanted to make a diamond shaped one but the parts just don't fit together right.

bliplace board 1

Final boards will be black with white text on both sides.

[i]nevwyn posting in [i]worldofwarcraft: Need a new laptop for WoW

Okay here is the deal apparently my heat sinks clogged up again on my dell and it has fried it self a second time. Last time it was under warranty and it needed a complete overhaul to get back to usable. This time no warranty so screw it time for a new one, I am not currently looking for a custom loaded to the gills gaming laptop as student loans are coming out in two months ish and I was going to build a new desktop then to handle all my time wasting needs then depending on the needs of any software my classes require (or my student discounts let me afford).

spooky ghost cistern

I know country when I see it, and St. Johns is country. Cart-pushing trainwrecks, nasty belching heifers arranging dick on their RAZR 2s, chinstraps in beaters, portch dranks, riced Datsuns, tube tops with teeth to match, all of it. And yet, and yet, and yet....

I'm walking through the Safeway parking lot when I hear something barked at me from a dark car. I flinch, tighten up, and get ready for some fucking scene. I look over and it's some yumyum bull in a Carhartt's tee, smiling at me. Flirting. Oh. Oh.

I still love you, Portland. Even your muggy country shithole parts.

[i]kinnerc: I Adore British Television...

Nowhere - nowhere - on broadcast television in the United States, to say nothing of NPR (although they came close once), would you hear the following:

***

Man Who Cannot Be Named (Coming out to his sister): "...so, I'm not broadcasting it."

Sister: "Oh no, honest. I won't say. If you want it kept quiet I...I swear I won't say a word. I promise."

Brother-in-law (walking into the house, honestly happy to see the Man Who Cannot Be Named): "Aye, aye! Gayboy! She says you're taking it up the ass!"

(Sister looks profoundly embarrassed.)

Man Who Cannot Be Named (to his sister, quietly): "Thanks."
